David received his Bachelor of Arts from California Lutheran University in 1986 and his Master of Arts from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1992.
David has been active in the home improvement and renovation field since 2000, beginning with the remodel of his 1913 farmhouse-style home near Washington, DC. After relocating to Seattle, he shifted his focus toward budget-friendly, homeowner-driven remodeling projects.
Before the 2000s, David worked for the State of California at Hearst San Simeon State Park, also known as Hearst Castle. He has lived in Mississippi, New Orleans, and Savannah, Georgia, where he contributed to the preservation of the historic Kehoe House.
